Make Do and Mend - Shambles
If Brand New were nihilists, they would sound like this.
I don’t believe in anything worth fighting for, worth dying for.
I don’t believe the clouds are hiding much more than a reason to downpour.
So what would you do if you were me?
Give up, forget, and go back to sleep.
And I believe that heaven is like her ocean eyes, deeper than mountains climb.
And I believe that hell is like watching her smile knowing she’ll never be mine.
So what would you do if you were me?
Just hide your heart and go back to sleep.
So go back to sleep.
Make Do and Mend released the album (Bodies of Water) free for download. Their link requires iTunes. This one doesn’t (though it does requires extracting a rar archive).
Lyrically, I’m not sure what to make of this song. If the ‘were you me’ part is suggesting the lyricist is above surrendering to futility, I like it despite the insinuations of superiority. I’m gonna go with that.
Also, to be both love sick and nihilistic is to be in contradiction. Still the melodramatic prose, though juvenile, has more merit than a more obfuscated expression. At least that is how I justify liking it.
